What I Wore Today

I have this amazing corset that I bought years ago for my wedding. I usually limit my use of it to Halloween, but this night I wanted to try something a little different with it and throw it over a LBD (Little Black Dress) and belting it to add a splash of color. It’s quite by accident that my lip colour matches my belt. Lately, I have been trying to use garments in different ways. It takes time to figure it out and trail and error but the important thing is to not get discouraged. If something doesn’t work out the way you’s hoped just give it time, perhaps you just haven’t found that something perfect to make it work.

I felt with a piece as bold as a bright white corset, I decided to go accessory-less, which I don’t usually like to do but sometimes you have to let the outfit speak for it’s self

LBD (Little Black Dress): Xhilaration (Target)

What I Wore Today

As per usual, I was having a hard time finding motivation to get ready and go out, but alas, I did.

I first considered wearing a skirt or a dress out, but ultimately realized that with my LC jean leggings fresh out of the laundry I couldn’t resist wearing them. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do up top however, I did know that I wanted something a little masculine as well as something a little flowy at the same time.

As I dug through Thom’s closet trying on shirt after shirt I finally found this little number and fell in love with it. Seriously, the texture of the fabric is amazingly soft and I love the print! I didn’t want to look too under-dressed and I thought it would be fun to concentrate a little more on accessories mostly because I am really into them at the moment.I was hoping that I could wear my hair a little bigger but there is only so much one can do straight out of the shower.

Someone told me last night that with my hair, the pearls and the flannel I looked like Marilyn Monroe! Not a bad compliment, huh?

What I Wore Today

When I shop it’s like war. I go to every women’s store in the mall or along the street for some intel. I do full sweeps of the stores and grab as many items as I like (and can carry) in the first round. Try on stuff, put aside the maybes and attack the sales floor again. I can shop so fast I should get an award for it! But, honestly, this is how I am able to find the many gems I find. I’m always on the hunt for a sale or a cheap store. But my favorite (and very dangerous) missions take place in the magical kingdom of the internet.

The greatest thing about internet shopping is you get the high from shopping, you add to your cart, review, take things out, add things, and then you pay. I love it! But the best part comes a few weeks later when the purchases arrive in their large boxes concealing items I have already forgotten about. It’s like getting presents in the mail. Like someone who knows you really well picked out a bunch of things just for me and had them sent right over! It’s like a happy ending to a beautiful movie. I don’t care what store they came from, I care how awesome they are.

This shirt was purchased from Wet Seal (online). I loved the idea of a super long shirt and it was on sale! When it came in the mail I was a bit disappointed, as can happen with internet shopping. The shirt didn’t have buttons all the way down it and the middle of the shirt split too high under the sweater part. I took it to the tailor and had them sew part of it shut.

I wore this shirt a couple of times to school with skinny high-waisted jeans and cute women’s oxford heels. But this particular night I wanted to do something a little special with it. I have not learned how to reconstruct garments yet so I do a lot of tucking and pinning, which honestly leaves me with more options in the long run. Belting it helped the folds stay in place and the black mini gave it a great cut-out look.

The Look:

Long Sweater Shirt: Wet Seal

Black Bandage Mini: H&M

Belt: Forever 21

White Studded Platform Pumps: Charlotte Russe

Fan: Wedding Favor (Kim & Ryan Jensen)

Hot Pink Heart Earrings: Wholesale Accessories Store (Chula Vista, San Diego)

Fedora: Brixton (Borrowed from Thom)

What I Wore Today

Sometimes I feel like a badass, and I often want to reflect my mood in my outfit. All though sometimes the outfit is intended to help me forget how I’m feeling at a particular moment and kind of restart my engine. That’s the basic idea behind this outfit.

Years and years and years ago when I was still living in Los Angeles we got our first Forever 21, or XXI as it was called back then. One day I was looking around and I found this amazing leather motorcycle jacket. It was $50, which was unheard of back then for Forever 21. But I loved it and had to have it. In the time that followed I wore the jacket maybe 4 times.

When I met Thom he was super skinny and could fit into the jacket so I gave it to him. Fast-forward a few years to when I rediscovered this piece in the back of his closet. I pulled it out to take a look at it and decided to try to work it back in to my circulation.

On this particular night, I needed something that reflected the message sent by my tee shirt, which was of course, badass!

The moral of the story is if there is an article of clothing that you absolutely love and you can afford it, you should get it. You might not wear it today or tomorrow or the next day, but you will someday. Sometimes it’s as simple as maturing into someone who can wear pieces that speak for themselves without feeling drowned out by the image you’re trying to portray. I find that the older I get the more fashion risks I’m willing to take. I think when you’re younger (as in teens and early 20-somethings) you’re still trying to find yourself and most people at that age are worried about ridicule that can be brought on by the wrong fashion choice. So you play your cards close to your heart and hope for the best. But as you get older you get this kind of “I know what I like and if no one else likes it they can go you-know-what themselves.” This is when life is it’s sweetest and fashion is at it’s purest. Relish these moments and make them count for all you can!

The second side of this moral is, though I’m a huge advocate for getting rid of garments you don’t wear, this is the exception to the rule. If you have something you love (clothing wise) hang on to it for a bit, who knows it could turn out to be much more of a treasure than you think.

Leather Motorcycle Jacket: Forever 21

High-Waisted Denim Skirt: Forever 21
